Word from Jennifer Briscoe

I just wanted to send you an update on what is going on for me. I currently have 3 callings/ assignment. The one that I have had the longest is the Relief Society Secretary in my ward. I was also recently called to be the Employment Specialist, which is very ironic since I myself am looking for a job! Also I was asked to serve as an Ordinance Worker in the Rexburg Idaho Temple. That has been quite a challenge for me as I haven't tried to memorize anything for quite a while. But I am slowly making progress through each of the different ordinances. I am also part of a Singles Stake that encompasses 16 Family Stakes. My Stake President is Edwin Sexton,  and he told me that he remembers you, President Colton, from when he was a Stake President in Virginia. We just had an amazing Stake Conference last weekend. I am also having some fun with my Sister and her husband, and her 4 children! I hope you two are doing well and having some great adventures!

David and Katie Folkner Reporting In

We are doing so well right now.  We are very happy with our decisions in the recent past.

Katie and I both graduate in May from Utah State University and absolutely loved it.  Although the 100 hour weeks of thesis grind at the end was quite taxing!  I was lucky enough to have many opportunities out of the gate, including getting full time wages from the Air force Research Lab in Edwards while getting a PhD from USU.  I turned that down though, for a fantastic lifestyle/opportunity at GE Oil and Gas in Minden Nevada.

My job is a general mechanical engineering job, but I'm already getting opportunities to use my fluid dynamics expertise here.

Here, we live in a very small town.  The entire valley has about 30k people, but we're only about 20 minutes from Carson City and 45 from Reno.  We are also just a stones throw form Lake Tahoe, infact Katie  is working up at the lake.  It is perfect.  We get small town feel on a day to day, arts/concerts and fun activities up at the lake, and big time shopping near by.  We live about 2 miles from my work, so my bike is getting lots of use.  It is truly a great place to live.

We also bought a small house that we just love.  Our neighborhood has several members, but not too many!  Just right!  It's cute, adorable and conveniently located.  And best of all, we got super low interest!

We have a puppy coming our way in a week.  She is adorable and named Ragnar.  She is a mini australian shepherd to match my high energy.  We are excited to have her in our house.

Between going to concerts, volunteering in backcountry ultra marathons, working, and kayaking we've been keeping busy.  We are crossing the atlantic to go on a cruise out of Venice with Katie's family this month and are extremely excited for that too.  My brother isn't too far in San Francisco, so that is going well.

Ellie Beth Hardy Arrives

I was just thinking about how I need to send a little update for the blog.  I finally have a few minutes to get on my computer while I'm not holding a baby!  HA!

We welcomed Ellie Beth Hardy into our family on April 12, 2013.  She weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces and was 20 1/2 inches long.  She is growing so fast!  We can't believe she is almost 7 weeks old already.  We are adjusting to being parents slowly but surely.  Landen is working full time as a machinist and getting ready to go back to school. Aubrie is lucky enough to stay home with little Ellie.  We just bought a house in Smithfield in January and we love having our own place to call home.  Life is good!

Trenton Gates in Hawaii

I just wanted to let you and president know that I am here in Hawaii working for Living Scriptures selling the animated DVDs on the Book of Mormon and the other scriptures. If you want to put that on the blog that would be nice.
It's hot and humid just like Florida. But unlike Florida I can sleep every night with the windows open at night and not feel like I am suffocating in my sleep. It doesn't rain as much here as it does in Florida. I got to see Josh Graham and his lovely wife. I am going to be here all summer long. Right now I am on the island of Oahu and will be here till about the middle of June, and then I don't know which island I will be going to next maybe Maui. It's been really challenging for me to be out here; a great tax on faith for sure.

Shauna and Ryan Nokes Update

Shauna (Stewart)  and Ryan Nokes have had a very busy year with a lot of changes. We are living about an hour outside DC, in northern Virginia. Last spring I started teaching piano lessons to 2 teenagers. Since that time, my number of students has grown to 16! In early November Ryan's company moved most of their operations down to South America and they gave us a choice: move to Chile (though there's no guarantee they could ever bring us back to the states), or get laid off. We opted NOT to move to Chile. As is so often the case in life, the Lord was in the details and we had started looking several months earlier at other business opportunities.

When the day of lay offs came we already had a plan and we purchased a painting franchise called Five Star Painting. We officially bought the business in December. The past 6 months have been a whirlwind of obtaining contractor licensing in VA, hiring painting crews, networking, and for me, obtaining a hands-on business education! I have left my previous employment to work with Ryan (more) full-time (still teaching piano though). It has been a bumpy ride, and we've never worked so hard. We have talked often about how so many of the principles of missionary work apply to what we are now doing. Diligence, dedication, follow-up, committing people to a timeline, talking to people about their families and lives, etc. We've even had some missionary opportunities both with customers and also with painters we employ. This has all required an immense amount of faith and trust in the Lord, but we both see the hand of the Lord in our lives daily as we've taken on this challenge of business ownership.

Debbie Conover Olsen and Husband in New Hampshire

The Debbie (Conover) and Seth Olsen family live in New Hampshire where Seth is getting a joint degree in law and an MBA.  Debbie is busy caring for two little boys and preparing to welcome their third child, a girl, in September.  Opportunities for missionary work abound in New Hampshire, especially when there are two people who love to share the gospel.  That would be Debbie and Seth!  Debbie's passions at the moment are: Family, missionary work (the gospel) and health.

Jay Hamann and Erin Mulkay Marry in the Los Angeles Temple

Over the last three years I have been studying marketing at Brigham Young University-Idaho. I have one more semester here until I finish. I am pretty excited for that. I am currently working on getting a job in Orlando once iI graduate, and hopefully be able to live in my beloved Polk County yet again.
Some other exciting news is that I had the privilege of marrying my sweetheart Erin Mulkay in the Los Angeles Temple.  This happened on the 13th of April. We are extremely happy. She is about to finish her degree in math education here at BYUI as well.

The Millers, Russ and Karen, to Serve in Fresno, California

We report to the MTC Monday, April 29 and we are going to the California Fresno Mission and will be living in Modesto, California.  We are so excited because that is just at the base of the Sierras, very close to Yosemite and other places we enjoyed over the years.

It is very different for Senior Couples now.  The mission will be leasing our apartment and furnishing it completely (right down to the kitchen sponge.)  We will be able to move right in and start working.  In fact, we are not even going to Fresno for awhile.  Our Zone Leaders will meet us and get us oriented to the mission.  There is no way it will compare with Florida and the close friendships we made there, but we are looking forward to new experiences that will be memorable in their own way and people we will cherish.  We thnk of you often and are grateful for the time we spent working together.

Sister Dorothy Erdman Contines to Inspire Us

Thank you for keeping in touch.  I have many happy memories of our Florida missions & enjoy hearing news of others we knew there.  I am enjoying my new home with daughter Lisa & her family of 8 children.  Living together required a move to a larger house, so when I sold our Oregon home I added the money to Lisa & David's & we bought a beautiful big home which fits all of us nicely.  I have my own very comfortable quiet quarters.

We've had an exciting month.  A granddaughter left for a mission in Honduras, a grandson came home from a California Spanish speaking mission & his sister left today for a mission in Seattle.  This last Sunday our son Kimball (who has 7 children) was called to be bishop of his ward in Arkansas & I was able to fly there for the weekend to share that experience.  I'm sure that Kim was looking down from above with that big smile on his face, pleased and proud of his son as I am.

I am so grateful to be a member of the true Church of Jesus Christ, for the pattern it gives us for our lives and for the knowledge we have of the eternal nature of the family.  It gives us purpose and meaning in this life and hope for the future.  Only in following this gospel plan can we have true happiness.

John Speirs Finishes M.S. in Applied Physics

I have finished a M.S. in Applied Physics from the Colorado School of Mines and am currently working as an introductory physics instructor both face-to-face at Arapahoe Community College and online at a college and a state university. I am working to go back for a Ph. D. in Physics, probably with an emphasis in Physics Education.
I'm living in a super awesome place in Wheat Ridge, CO

Trevor Andreasen Marries Jordan Cox in Orlando Temple

I just got married on March 28th in the Orlando temple to Jordan Cox. We met here at BYU and it turns out she is from Auburndale FL on the lakeland stake which is one of 2 stakes I never served in. We are living in UT and I am finishing up on finals then headed to Las Vegas for an open house. Then cruise in May and my wife's sisters wedding at the end of May. Happily married for time and all eternity. Loving life and just found out I will be a pilot in the air force as soon as I graduate which will be in Aug 2014 then headed to training. Love you Coltons!

Isaiah Benally Studies Crimminal Justice and Forensic Science

Elder Benally (now Isaiah Benally) I thought I'd let you know what I'm up to. I've been working at the Provo temple as a veil worker for the past semester. I'm going back to Arizona on the 25th but when I come back this fall I'll be working at the temple again. I'm still in Criminal Justice with a  minor in forensic science. I was also accepted in Phi Kappa Phi honors society. I've considering going to BYU law school after I graduate. Otherwise things have been going really well. Challenging but still nice. I hope you're doing well.

The Tufts in Gdansk, Poland

We are happily serving a second mission in Gdansk, Poland (The Prussian city of Danzig).  We have a small branch here.  We love the people here and are struggling mightily to learn to speak Polish.  I have attached a few pictures, one of the senior missionaries here in Poland and one of the six missionaries in Gdansk and President and Sister Nielson.

A Letter from the Coltons

                                                       President Colton's domestic side.

24 April 2013

Dear FTM Missionaries,

It has been some time since we communicated with you as a group.  We trust that you are progressing well in your education, life’s work and if the time is right for you, in your special relationships and your family.  It is pure joy for us to hear from you and learn first hand what you are doing.  We greatly enjoy updates, pictures, announcements;  all things relating to your lives.  Since we rarely go on Facebook, we have to use the tools of the caveman to get our information.  So be mindful of us.

As usual, April conference was a spiritual and directional uplift for us.  We are grateful for men and women inspired to guide us as the world is changing in many ways; some good and some not so good.  To see the faith and integrity of many like yourselves who are unmoved as right is abused and twisted to look wrong and wrong is twisted to look right, we take heart.  “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15)

We hope you will take a moment from time to time to peek into the blog.  We keep posting some information but there will be a lot more if you send your information to Sister Colton.  So many good things are happening in your lives that we are sure your former companions would love to hear about it.  And not just on Facebook!

Our email addresses for all of you are incomplete.  Many of our missionaries who returned home after we returned are not on my file.         The blog address is: floridatampamission-colton.blogspot.com      Please forward it to anyone you think might have an interest in the blog.  There are some recent posts, and you need to find out who is getting married and who has just paid a recent visit to Washington DC.  and a face from the past for you to identify.   Leave us a comment.  If you have an e-mail address that changes, please let us know that also.

The Colton’s are doing well.  President Colton is still trying to solve the country’s housing finance problems and was recently made a sealer in the Washington DC Temple.  If any of you choose this temple to be married and sealed, he would love to be part of it.  Sister Colton is also a temple worker and very busy being a grandmother and preparing to publish a children’s book about her great, great grandmother from Denmark.

We send our love to each of you,

President and Sister Colton
